I should have included “for the Business” at the end of it, but then the title would have been too long.
But since I’m blogging about it, I guess it will end up being your business.
I have yet another confession to make, guys.
I’ve been spending a lot of money this year and not experiencing any chrometophobia about it. Weird, I know. I have the opposite feeling – that adrenaline rush during exercise and that endorphin high after exercise. I suppose this is what shopaholics feel like.
I actually enjoy buying these things and want to buy more of them. I’m giving my credit card a bit of a workout.
So what the heck am I talking about?
Anything and everything that has to do with the blog and my side project (I know I keep saying side project. I swear one day I will tell you what it is).
I seriously think it had to do with the moment I decided to invest in a professional blog design. Unfortunately, the StudioPress pre-made theme I had before just wasn’t cutting it. I didn’t want to have a design similar to other sites anymore. I wanted to stand out and I knew in order to do so, I would have to shell out some money. It was definitely worth it though because I now feel I have a style and logo that represents the brand. I’ve been trying to incorporate the style and logo into my social media accounts and my email newsletter.
Then earlier in the year I spent money on business cards and a couple of e-courses. Then I spent several hundred dollars more on items for the side project.
This week I spent a little over a hundred dollars for a WordPress plugin to help grow my email list.
I was still tracking my expenses and then researching on courses, companies and comparing prices, trying to find discount codes for every product I purchased. But I never worried about overspending or going over budget. It’s not as if my blog expenses were causing me to go into debt.
To be honest, I don’t really have a monthly budget for blog expenses. I’ve never set one. I didn’t think I would be making that many blog-related purchases. And given the fact that I’ve been spending more and now that I’m writing about it, I probably should set one every month. Figure out what I want to focus on – what I need to purchase for it.
I feel I’m spending on something blog related every month. While there are a lot of free resources available, sometimes it’s worth it to spend a bit of extra money to get those extra features, especially when you see yourself using the resource more and more down the road.
Unless you already have an online business, I personally don’t feel it’s necessary to have to invest in all those subscriptions right from the start. All those expenses are more for the long-term and if you are really serious about treating your blog like a business.
Not only am I about investing in stocks and ETFs (link to a stock post), but I’m all about investing in yourself. And now that I’m taking this blog thing seriously ( I STILL can’t get over the fact that it took me this long), it makes sense that I’m investing more and more items that are blog related.
If anything, I’d rather invest money on items that would benefit the blog. I’m not the type to spend much money on material things, but more so for experiences. I think every trip I’ve been on has been worth it and is worth talking about time and time again. The topic of talking about expensive clothing or accessories can get old pretty fast. At least with me it does.
It makes me laugh because back when I first started I was nervous at the idea of spending less than $50 to renew a domain name or go self-hosted. I don’t know why. People spend money on their hobbies all the time. Some hobbies are really expensive (i.e. golf).
Perhaps I really liked blogging because it was free to start out and could be as free for as long as I wanted to be. But it’s like those sayings go “You have to spend money to make money”. It’s important to invest a lot of time and money into the things that matter to you, the things you hold dear to your heart.
Have you made a lot of purchases for your blog and/or online business lately? In what way?
Speaking of something that I’m investing a lot of time in, I’ve been trying to increase the likes on my FB page. If you could like it, that would be amazing and I would be forever grateful. I’ve started a FB group that talks about finding a suitable career for you, networking and how a job shouldn’t be just a job. If you feel the same way and want to share your thoughts and experiences, come join the discussion here! Nothing with self-promotion, right? It is my blog after all.
I still get nervous spending money for my blog, which is silly because I spend so much money on other things that are so much less important to me! And if you want your blog to do well, some things you just need to suck up and pay for. Like a good design. (Yours looks great!) Sounds like you’re taking calculated risks with the money you’re spending, so I think you’re right not too worry about it. 🙂 Good luck and keep going!
I hear ya. Lately I’ve been doing more comparison spending, thinking to myself do I really need that new pair of shoes or should I put that money toward something blog related?
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the well-wishes!
Yes! As long as you can afford it, I totally agree – sometimes, you’ve got to spend some money to make more money. Loving the new look, btw!
